Looking for the perfect mix of relaxation and authentic Damascene heritage? You’ve got to check out Hammam Al-Selsela, one of the oldest working bathhouses in Damascus, with over 925 years of history! Built in 1100 AD, it’s more than just a hammam. It’s a living piece of the city’s soul.
The story goes back to the days of Sultan Al-Adel, who ordered iron chains (selsela) to block nobles from riding their horses all the way to the Umayyad Mosque. These chains were placed right in front of the hammam, hence the name.
From the moment you step in, it’s like time slows down. Stone arches, marble floors, carved wood, colored glass, the scent of incense in the air, and the gentle splash of the central fountain. It all takes you deep into old Damascus. The decor reflects the beauty of the past, but with comfort and elegance for today.
You start by changing into a towel and slippers, then head into the steam room for ten minutes to open your pores and release all the stress. Next comes the traditional scrub with a natural loofah and soap, done by a trained makkis. Then, it’s time for a relaxing massage to melt your tension away. The experience ends with fresh towels and a cup of herbal tea (ekrok ajam or zuhurat) that brings everything together.
